What is the object that is put in the bank head's mouth in the opening scene of Dark Knight?

In the opening bank robbery scene of Dark Knight, the Joker puts something into the mouth of the injured head of the bank with a string that gets pulled out when the bus is driven away. The thing then starts letting smoke-like stuff out. What is it? Is it something that would kill the guy? Any other facts or details about this object?
