Do deer hooves filter water?

I was sailing in the Persian gulf when I saw a herd of deers drinking from the sea. Persian Gulf is extremely salty and I wondered how could the deers drink such water. A local person explain that deer hooves act like a filter for salty water. Deers drink water from between their hooves where the water is filtered and is not salty. I Googled this later but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know if it is true?
