How do oil companies make money from ravaging coastlines?

I've been doing a bit of research into this and I've come to find out that oil companies make a lot of money from oil spills, which is presumably why they keep occurring (e.g. Exxon Valdez in Alaska, BP in the Gulf of Mexico). So I was just curious... How is this profitable?
