Is it safe to swim in the gulf of mexico?

i live in gulfshores alabama and was wondering if it really is safe to swim the the gulf now? i've heard of people getting long term effects like cancer with other oil spills so i was worried. i've only swam in the gulf once since the oil spill & it was about a year after it happened.
